National Science Day is celebrated in India on February 28 every year to mark the discovery of the “Raman effect” by prominent physicist Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman.
CV Raman, known for his work in the field of light scattering, had discovered the ‘Raman Effect’ in 1928. For his work, the great Indian physicist was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1930.
In 1986, the NCSTC asked the Government of India to designate February 28 as National Science Day. The event is now celebrated all over the country in schools, colleges, universities and other academic, scientific, technical, medical and research institutions. On the occasion of the first NSD (National Science Day)(28 February 1987) NCSTC announced institution of the National Science Popularization awards for recognizing outstanding efforts in the area of science communication and popularization.
The theme for National Science Day 2023 is “Global Science for Global Wellbeing”. The main event of the National Science Day will take place at the Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi. President Ram Nath will be present at the event.
