The first time International Day Of Rural Women came into being was in 2007, when the UN General Assembly felt that rural women must be honored and celebrated for their playing such a huge role in the food system. It was on December 17th 2007 that it was decided that International Day Of Rural Women should be celebrated on 15th October every year. The aim behind celebrating such a day according to UN was to comprehend “the critical role and contribution of rural women, including indigenous women, in enhancing agricultural and rural development, improving food security and eradicating rural poverty”
Rural women ensure food security for their communities, build climate resilience and strengthen economies. Yet, gender inequalities, such as discriminatory laws and social norms, combined with a fast-changing economic, technological and environmental landscape restrict their full potential, leaving them far behind men and their urban counterparts.
