Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day Quotes and Messages…
One of the days with great importance in the history of Turkey is May 19, 1919. This significant date is the day when the foundations of the new Turkish state were laid. Atatürk started the Great Speech with this event and marked his birthday as May 19.
Atatürk set out for Samsun on this important day. The significance of May 19, 1919 lies in its being the first day of liberation of Anatolia from the occupation of imperialist states who sought to share it between themselves. In other words, May 19 is the day when the Turkish War of Independence started. With this day, a fully independent Turkish nation was saved from being kept captive. While the Turkish nation was looking for ways of liberation in challenging living conditions and an environment of depression, the Great Leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk set foot on Samsun and paved the way for independence.
The fact that Atatürk dedicated this important day to the youth was a powerful sign of the first steps toward the new life of Turkey.
Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day is a public holiday. It is a day off for the general population, and schools and most businesses are closed.
In the run-up to the May 19 celebrations, young Turkish athletes carry the national flag from Samsun, a Black Sea port from where Mustafa Kemal Atatürk started Turkey’s War of Independence in 1919, to Ankara, the country’s capital. The marathon usually takes about 10 days. The Turkish president accepts the flag at a ceremony on May 19.
Various sports events take place on May 19 throughout Turkey. Many people celebrate this day by watching athletes perform at their local stadiums or by participating in sports events that are open to the public, such as half-marathons.
Many Turks also observe May 19 as Atatürk’s birthday. Although the exact date of his birth is not known, Atatürk used to say he was born on May 19 (referring to his political career). Many people lay wreaths to Atatürk’s monuments and hang Turkish flags outside their windows.
