Ashura Day Quotes and Messages…
Islamic New Year / Muharram is the month with which the Muslims begin their Hijrah Calendar. It marks the day when the new Hijri year begins and is on the day on which the year count is incremented. The first day of the year is observed on the first day of Muharram, the first month in the Islamic calendar.
Even though Muharram is a sanctified month as a whole, yet, the 10th day of Muharram is the most sacred among all its days. The day is named ‘Ashurah’. ‘Ashura is a religious observance marked every year by all Muslims all over the world. The word Ashura literally means “10th,” as it is on the 10th of Muharram.
The word Muharram itself means banned or forbidden, and the month is regarded as the second holiest after Ramadan. Even before the Prophet (saw) brought Islam to the Arabian Peninsula, warfare between the tribes of those lands was banned during Muharram.
“Verily, the number of months with Allah is twelve months (in a year), so it was ordained by Allah on the Day when He created the heavens and the earth; of them, four are sacred [(i.e. the first, the seventh, the 11th and the 12 months]. That is the right religion, so wrong not yourselves therein.” [Qur’an Surah al-Tawbah 9:36]
Based on numerous Hadith, scholars and interpreters unanimously agree that the four months are Muharram; Dhul Qa’dah (11th); Dhul Hijjah (12th), and Rajab (7th).
10 Muharram, or the day of Ashura, is the day when Allah saved Prophet Musa (A.S) and his people and drowns Pharaoh and his people. Thus the Prophet Musa (A.S) and his people used to fast on Ashura as a form of gratitude to Allah SWT. The Prophet SAW said that fasting on the day of Ashura can erase the minor sins that we committed in the past year.
Ashura Day is also commemorated as the day of the martyrdom of our Prophet’s beloved grandson, Iman Hussain (R.A), and his companions were mercilessly killed while fighting the tyranny of the Ummayad Caliph Yazid I at the Battle of Karbala.
